Hi Guys,
I'm Shruti and it's been nearly 4 months I have been in Canada and I would like to share my true experience of a Canadian life. You guys must be wondering why am I writing this post. I have specially created this one in order to guide others, like me who wish to visit this country and finally want to make this your home country.
By the way, I'm Indian and I'm married. Since childhood I had this very dream of going abroad and living a luxurious life which I wasn't convinced that I will ever get in India. I came here from Ireland, where I went with my husband and studied for a year. Then, we planned to immigrate to Canada when Irish economy was full of shit and we had no other option but to leave the country. So, Since I was already a student in Ireland, I applied for my second master's program in University of Ottawa (Winter 2012 program) and got my visa. After I got my Canada Student Visa, my husband applied for visiting visa stating that he wants to accompany me to celebrate Christmas and New year in Canada. He got his visitor visa too and we both came to Canada with our eyes full of dreams and success. However, we didn't know what will life unfold for us. I had my family here, my grandparents, maternal Uncle and aunt, my first cousins. We were very happy that we have come to my dreamland where I won't be alone..I would be with my family. My husband applied for Open work permit and he got that within 10 days. Yes, 10 days!! Can you Imagine that??? Its was our good luck!!
We were very happy. But then came the hardest part of our life. Finding job here in Canada. In the first week, he applied for nearly 200 jobs, but no response!! Then, 350 jobs in second week..still no response. He was contacted by many recruitment agencies but because he had no *Canadian Experience and security enhanced certificate*, there was no job for him. Then, our family members starting demotivating us that my husband has to do some survival job here in order to survive here. This caused more and more drift between our relationship. No body was really ever happy to help, despite demotivating us and asking my husband to do a job of Janitor!! Janitor!! Imagine, he was an Accountant in Ireland and Janitor here, to a place which was our dreamland for luxurious life!!
Two Months passed and still no response. Only getting standard emails of refusals and then, to our luck we got a call. The call was from an accounting company which interviewed for a bankruptcy role. Thanks to Bad Irish economy which helped him getting this job. His salary is not too high, but quite enough for our survival. Then we moved out of our family house and have rented our one bed apartment. Staying happily and praying to Lord for his three months probation period to get over happily.
Guys, I have only written this post as this was my promise to Lord to help others who also have their dream to visit Canada and make their home country. I don't think you will ever find anyone who will help others by guiding with their own experience. I just want to say to all of you, if you have family in Canada and they wish you to be here, please never stay with them. They will show you that they are very happy, well they are not. They will make your life hell. Please always be optimistic. This country is very welcoming to youngsters between the age of 21-29. If you are above 30 years, then please do not waste your life savings to visit here and spend all in shit. Do not ever sacrifice your good position back in your home country coz you will never earn that position here. This country is very nice and non-racial. It gives opportunity to those who are young and enthusiastic.
Moreover, Canada is over-regulated country. Getting a job here means you need to have a Canadian qualification or some Canadian experience. If you have any of the both, then luck is on your side. And lastly, never be pessimistic. My husband had no Canadian experience nor Canadian Qualification, but he did Masters from United Kingdom and job in Ireland, and so luck reflected on as well. So, Guys if you still want to make up here, then all you need to be is optimistic and enthusiastic. Please you can drop me any of your queries in the comment box, and I will happily help you guys. This is my promise because I promised my Lord that I will escort others who want to visit Canada.

ReplyDeleteHi. Very nice what you wrotte. I have been to Canada as a exchange studant for 6 months and it was a good experience. But now, back to my country, I don´t want to go back to Canada anymore. I´ve met to many people from around the world who were living in Canada and they said that is too hard to get a good job in Canada, even if you have a good qualification in your home country. Maybe in the past is was easier but now Canada has changed. As you said, you are young go ahead, because if you make mistake and things doesn´t work in Canada, you still have time to fix.

ReplyDeleteOpen work permit is the permit which is issued to only spouses of international students and workers working in Canada. It is non restricted work permit which allows one's spouse to work with any employer. You can visit CIC.gc.ca for more information.
DeleteThanks for sharing your story. From what I heard, people with temporary resident visa (TRV) are not eligible to apply for (Open) Work permit from within Canada. Only if you have been working or studying in Canada. Is this true? If my spouse is a Work Permit holder, and I am a TRV holder with a job offer, can I apply for Work permit from within Canada? ReplyDeleteIf your husband is at work permit in Canada and you have TRV, you can apply for open work permit and you do not need any job offer. You can apply for Open work permit without job offer.

I do not know if you have read it, but I have also written about my journey towards Canadian Immigration in my personal blog www.raju-thomas.com. I am yet to move to Canada permanently, but am planning to do so by October 2012. I know that life in Canada is not going to be a bed of roses, but I am trying to utilize the time before my final move for necessary ground work, including developing useful contacts in Canada, which is very important when it comes to finding work there. hi didi,thanks for posting this, real life experience always gives a true answers. im currently living in UK and did my bachelor degree here, my wife is in backhome Bangladesh and im currently processing my file to apply for study permit in canada from london embassy. already got offer letter from centennial college. she is a doctor backhome and its her choice to move together in canada. from your experience if you can tell me, is that would be wise if we apply together for study permit. or shall we apply later if i get the visa? also if you can please tell me, how much money i have to show in bank account if she decided to apply later for TRV. i couldn't find any info regarding these. please help!

DeleteThanks for your response. I would advice you that it would be better that you apply for student visa first and then she can apply. Your wife can apply for visitor visa and later she can get open work permit which will allow her to stay in Canada with you and to work as well. Regarding funds, I showed nearly $30,000. But that was me because I had savings, its better that you consult somebody regarding that information. Hope that helps!!

DeleteIt's good that you want to make Canada your home country. So, answers of your questions are as follows:
1.How to apply for Canda skilled worker category? - please visit cic.gc.ca and you will find the detailed booklet on how to prepare your full application.
2. how much money can sufficient for 1 child,my wife and me for 1 month? - It basically depends on how you want to spend it. You can work well between 2000-2500 CAD (Including rent and utilities).
3. do we need to write IELTS test or need to learn French? - You need to gives IELTS. For French, if you can learn then it's an asset as it will help you in getting a job much easily.

ReplyDeleteI am not an immigrant, but my parents were. They came here a long time go and are lucky to be well settled, me and my siblings were fortunate to have opportunities here and all went to University, we would not have had these opportunities in our home country.
Yet sadly I do see a lot of immigrants with advanced degrees who can't get a job, even many Canadian grads have a tough time. Economy is pretty bad.
I tell my cousins in the Middle East (well educated guys and girls) to not waste their time with Canada, and if you have a good job to just stay there, or go to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia etc..even places like Amman are booming.
Canada is great if you are a refugee from Palestine, Afghanistan etc..I know many Middle Eastern ppl(Palestinians/Lebabese/Iraqis/Afghans) , who came here in the 80's and 90's with nothing, but they were willing to work day and night, taking any odd job. Now these guys are wealhty businessmen, driving luxury cars and living in large houses. Their children are Accountants, Lawyers, Engineers etc..they have done very well. Some of these guys have no problem donating
$1 000,000 (yes one million) cash to the mosque during fundrasing drives.
However immigrants of today are coming from places like China and India, these guys have advanced degrees and are depressed by the market here. They don't want to deliver pizzas or work at a gas station.
I would tell these guys that if you have a good job, STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY, ESP DOCTORS, you have better chances in your own country if you are a professional than in Canada.
Canada does need immigrants, but what it needs is skilled labour (welers, plumbers etc..) and cheap labour, ie people to work at McDonalds, cleaning staff etc..thats why Canada is great for Phillipinos and Somalians etc..these people dont care and are willing to take any job. But for professionals it is a nightmare.

For the record, there are also Filipino and Somalian professionals that have advanced degrees and are depressed by the Canadian market. They may be doing survival jobs, but that doesn't mean they "don't care " and that they "are willing to take any job". For these people, survival jobs are exactly just that - for survival.
DeleteI don't want to discourage people from coming to Canada. There is some hardship in the beginning but rest of your life is so easy. One of the best health care system, Low crime Rate and good education system. I have been in canada for over ten years. I went through same hardship initially but now I have good life.

DeleteFirst of all congratulations on your PR Visa getting approved!!
Please do not worry. I would like to advice you that you can come to Canada and do some course from here in your hotel field. You won't be charged too much, coz you would be exempt from paying international fees. This way you can earn a canadian qualification and you can get a job easily once your course is finished.
If you do not want to do a course, my advice for that would be that you can come here now without leaving your job back in India. Weather is on rocks here and many visitors come to Canada to visit. You can easily find a job here.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge you that please make your resume much professional according to canadian standards and do not apply for jobs from India. They see your address on resume and would not call you.

DeleteI am just a student here. I don't have much knowledge. I would advise you to search on internet for knowledge on resumes. Monster.ca would definitely help you. Moreover, employers won't reply you if will apply from India as they know that you aren't available in Canada at the moment of interview.
I would advise you that you should visit cic for further details. Their website has more information...

Hello Raveesh.. I really do not have much detailed idea on that. I apologise for that but I would suggest you that you must at that place where you find a good course and financial stability. I have many friends livin in Canada whose first blood relatives too live in same province/region.

Delete2) If your course is more than 1 yr but les than 2 yrs, you will get PGWP based on the official length of the course. I cannot fully confirm this, but please ask other students who have aken this course.
